U12’s Cup Final v Asfordby
17th May 2023
Sundays match saw the Rugby Borough U12 girls travel to Oadby & Wigston to play Asfordby Amateurs in the Leicestershire League Cup Final.
The girls arrived with mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation. They got to use the changing room for the pre-match team talk, then lined up with their mascot Quinn to walk out in front of a large crowd of travelling supporters.
Rugby looked like they were raring to go, the whistle blew and Borough were on the front foot straight away. Within the first 2 minutes, Lexie took a throw in which went over Ruby’s shoulder, she turned onto the ball and shot across the goal into the far corner, 1-0 Borough.
The girls were dominating possession which led to Jess having a long range strike which went just over the bar. Megan, Freya and Ruby were linking up to cause the Asfordby defenders all sorts of problems, this meant their keeper had to make some fine saves.
Peyton, our right back, made a magnificent run up the wing, took a long range shot that was blocked, the ball flew into the air and Peyton won it back to take another shot that went in, 2-0 Borough.
A free kick by Lexie went slightly wide, Isla and Ese came onto the wings and made some lovely crosses into the box. Ese then took a short corner to Mia, another defender, who struck the ball from outside the box, over the keepers head and into the far corner, 3-0 Borough.
The opposition had a few counter attacks which were dealt with by our brilliant defence of Lexie, Ava, Peyton and Mia, who individually and as a unit all had a fantastic game. Towards the end of the first half Isla chased the ball down to win her team a corner, she put a great delivery into the box which Megan laid off for Isla to whip the ball back into the box where Ese fired it into the net, 4-0 Borough at half time.
Into the second half and we got to see Ava making some great pin point passes to the midfielders to start more attacks. Maia in central midfield was winning the ball and making forward runs, even taking a few shots at goal.
Anna was working the right wing well, beating her opposite number before putting crosses into the box, where Freya, Ruby and Jess continued to keep the opposition goalie busy.
Into the last 10 minutes of the match and some lovely quick passing created the opportunity for Ese to score her second goal of the game, 5-0 Borough.
Another outstanding performance by Chloe gained her yet another clean sheet.
A great win for the girls to become Leicestershire League Cup Champions 2023! This topped off a wonderful season, the team have worked so hard coming third in the top league with 14 wins.
Thank you to Oadby and Wigston for hosting the final on a beautifully manicured pitch, to the officials, especially Amber the referee who had a great game, to the parents and supporters who came to cheer the girls on today and all year round and especially to coaches Gary & Matt for all their hard work and dedication over the entire season.
After the game the girls celebrated in style travelling home in a party bus, followed by a garden party, to end a fantastic day 🧡
