MATCH REPORT
U12 Girls v Sporting Markfield
14th February 2023
- Date: 3rd Feb 2023
- League: League Cup
- Venue: Kilsby Lane
Last weekend saw our girls play in the second round of the league cup versus Sporting Markfield.
Another chilly Sunday morning at Kilsby lane saw the girls arriving through some very squelchy mud, much to the dismay of Ava & Ruby who were sporting their shiny new boots.
A full squad meant the coaches could make some changes and had their pick of substitutes.
Our captain for the match was Maia following on from her well deserved POM last game.
The girls started the game on the front foot playing mostly in the oppositions half, which was the pattern that followed for most of the game.
Good passing play between our midfielders, Maia, Megan and Jess kept the pressure on the opposition. The lovely footwork from our wingers Anna, Freya and Isla resulted in some great crosses towards goal and our strikers Ruby and Ese had some shots at goal, only to be kept out by Sportings good goalkeeper, the woodwork and at times the wind.
0-0 at half time was a bit of a shock to everyone, Sporting Markfield had definitely brought a ‘go for it’ attitude which was keeping them well in the game.
Into the second half and the game continued in much the same way.
Our defence made up of Peyton, Mia, Lexi & Ava got to play high up the pitch, pushing us forward at every opportunity, but also covering any slight breakaways by the opposition. A lonely looking figure of Chloe in goal was getting the chance to watch the majority of the match but was, as always, there with safe hands on the odd occasion she was called upon.
Into the dying moments of the game and still at 0-0 everyone was starting to get a little worried that penalties were heading our way, nerves were clear to see all round. This was until, cool as a cucumber, Jess gets hold of the ball, using her amazing speed and skill to get past any players, heads right towards goal, we all take a deep breathe and…….. IT’S IN!! The crowd and players erupt into cheers and applause and with that the final whistle goes.
Phew 1-0 and Borough are through to the next round.
A massive well done must be said to Sporting Markfield who really brought their game and tested us until the last minute. And a big thank you to Brett for running the line.
Player of the match most certainly had to go to our saviour of the day Jess for her fantastic last minute winning goal.
