Rugby Borough 5 v 1 FC Aztec
Rugby Borough had their first home match of the season on a lovely autumn day.
The girls started off on the front foot and were quickly rewarded by a great run by Anna up the wing, who crossed it in for Ruby to score. The girls kept pressing forward in the early stages with good running down the left from Lexie & Freya creating various chances.
As we know from before Aztec are a good team & they found their stride midway through the 1st half but Peyton & Ava defended resolutely to stop any attacks that came their way. On the odd occasion they did break through Chloe was there with safe hands.
Amber & Ese worked hard to stretch the oppositions defence but just before half time Aztec managed to pull a goal back to draw themselves level.
The girls were encouraged to be quicker in the tackle at half time and they came out a much more determined team. The momentum was set straight away & a great cross by Freya found Megan who slotted the ball home with her left foot.
Rugby were now dominating the 2nd half and pressure high up the pitch meant that Aztec struggled to get out and led a succession of chances for Rugby to extend the lead but excellent goalkeeping kept the score down at this stage.
Mia joined the defence and showed some great skills moving forward. Maia, with her steely determination, was winning the ball back frequently in midfield to start attacks. The pressure paid of & Rugby extended the lead through a great long range strike from Jess. Not content with that one she went bettered it moments later with a stunning strike from outside the box which looped over the goalkeeper into the net.
Rugby were camped inside the Aztec half at this stage & Freya and Ruby were unlucky not to add more goals with some great runs and strikes. Anna then completed the goals with a very composed finish near the end.
It was another excellent performance from the girls against a good team, after an even first half they dominated the 2nd carving out lots of chances and taking their goals very well.
