Rugby Borough Women FC 2–0 Loughborough Lightning

Rugby Borough Women marked their long-awaited return to league action with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Loughborough Lightning at Kilsby Lane, showing both quality and resilience to claim all three points.

Following a run of fixture postponements, Lee Burch named an almost unchanged side from the team that recorded a dominant 10–1 win at Stourbridge, as Borough looked to maintain momentum and keep pressure on the league’s top two.

The visitors started brightly and looked to test the hosts early on, but it was Borough who struck first inside the opening 15 minutes. A well-weighted pass from Amelia Hazard picked out Sofia Mallon, who kept her composure in front of goal to calmly slot home and give the hosts the lead.

Borough grew in confidence after the opener, enjoying spells of possession and patiently breaking down the opposition. Their control was rewarded just before the hour mark when Mallon was again involved, delivering a driven cross into the box that was met by Yasmin Mosby, who doubled Borough’s advantage to put them firmly in control.

However, the complexion of the game shifted just before half-time when Borough were reduced to ten players. Saskia Morris was shown a second yellow card and subsequently sent off, handing Loughborough a numerical advantage heading into the second period.

Despite the setback, Borough produced a determined and disciplined second-half performance. The hosts continued to show bravery on the ball and remained well-organised defensively, frustrating a Loughborough side that naturally grew into the contest with the extra player.

The visitors increased the pressure during the final 20 minutes, but Borough stood firm, with goalkeeper Poppy Soper producing a smart save to deny a Loughborough forward and preserve the clean sheet. Even during late stoppage time pressure, the hosts held their shape and saw the game out professionally.

It was a display full of character from Burch’s side, combining attacking quality with defensive resilience to secure an important victory in the league. Attention now turns to Borough’s next league fixture, as they host Middlesbrough at Kilsby Lane in a rearranged clash following the earlier postponement.
