Rugby Borough Women FC vs Rubery Juniors Ravens

19th October 2020

After their first loss of the season last Sunday, Rugby Borough Women were determined to come back stronger this week, facing Rubery Juniors Ravens at home.

Rugby started the game off well with some good work from the defence, keeping Rubery away from goal. Rugby lost a little concentration early on lost their shape for around 10 minutes, struggling to win any battles in the middle of the park but eventually found their feet again, Borough looked like a different team with some really nice link-up play, passing in triangles around the Rubery midfield players.

There were a few chances created in the first half, Em took a shot from outside the box which looked like it could have just trickled over the line as Rubery’s keeper caught it. A couple of other missed shots too meant Borough struggled to find the net before the half time whistle.

Half time score: Rugby Borough 0-0 Rubery Ladies

Rubery kicked off the second half but Rugby carried on with the same momentum they’d developed in the first half, creating many chances after winning their individual battles all over the pitch and getting closer to goal. It was not long into the first half when Cheryl scored a wonderful goal taking 2 defenders with her, then turning them both to fire a shot across the keeper and into the opposite far corner, making it 1-0 to Rugby.

This boosted Rugby, giving them the drive to create more opportunities to score. However, shortly after this first goal, Rubery pounced on an opportunity with a volley from 30 yards out with too much power on the shot for Beth to keep out, hitting the back of the net to equalise, making it 1-1.

Rugby’s heads did not go down as they continued to battle hard throughout the second half, playing some lovely football up the pitch. The link-up play between Cammie and Em on the wing opened up an opportunity for Cheryl to get her second goal of the game, again finishing well.

Almost immediately after the second goal, Cheryl got her third of the game completing her first hat trick for the club!

By this point, Rubery were visibly starting to tire from the fast pace of football Rugby were playing. This tiredness led Rubery to make a foul just inside their own half, where Tammi took the free kick to find Cheryl, who perfectly half volleyed the ball into the back of the net, making it 4-1 to Rugby.

Rugby still had plenty of chances to score more goals in the remainder of the game but were unable to finish! Overall a very good team performance from the ladies and 100% better then last weeks performance. Rugby Borough climb back to second place in the league.

Well done to Beth F for making her debut for Rugby Borough.
Congratulations to Cheryl for getting a well deserved player of the match!
