Borough show no cup hangover to earn deserved point on final day

Rugby Borough Women FC 1–1 Hull City Women

Rugby Borough Women signed off their season with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Hull City at Kilsby Lane, showing no signs of a post-cup hangover as they produced an energetic display to secure a well-earned point.

Fresh from their Challenge Cup triumph, Lee Burch’s side returned to home turf for the final game of the campaign, looking to build on their recent success and cap off a historic season in positive fashion.

Borough started brightly, playing with real zip and intensity as they looked to pick up where they left off against Wolves. An inviting cross from Jess Camwell found Sofia Mallon early on, but her
header failed to hit the target.

After a lively opening, the tempo began to settle as both sides looked to gain control. Yas Mosby came closest to breaking the deadlock midway through the half, seeing her curling effort whistle just past the post.

Just before the interval, a wayward delivery from Kelis Barton almost caught the visitors out, looping narrowly over the bar as the hosts continued to probe.

Following a cagey first half, Hull emerged with renewed intent after the break and began to put pressure on the Borough defence. Just after the hour mark, that pressure told as the visitors were awarded a penalty. Despite Freya Upson guessing the right way, Hull converted from the spot to take the lead.

Burch responded with a series of changes, and the hosts quickly found a route back into the contest. Nicky Potts rose well inside the box to head home from close range, bringing Borough level and reigniting the energy around Kilsby Lane.

Rugby pushed for a winner in the closing stages and came agonisingly close on multiple occasions. Katy Morris saw her effort crash back off the woodwork, while Potts was unable to convert from close range moments later.

There was still time for one final chance, as Mai Moncaster struck the crossbar with the last kick of the game, summing up a dramatic finale to the season.

The full-time whistle confirmed a point for Borough, ensuring they finish third in the league, their best-ever league finish, to go alongside their Challenge Cup success.

It brings the curtain down on a memorable campaign for Rugby Borough Women, with silverware secured and continued progress both on and off the pitch.
