Potts double inspires Borough to stunning National League Cup win.

Rugby Borough Women produced a dominant performance in the National League Cup, running out 5–0 winners against Arsenal U21s at the Nationwide Windows Arena to climb to the top of Group K and seal progression to the next round of the competition.

The game began with intensity, quickly developing into an open, end-to-end contest, with chances at both ends inside the opening stages.

The first big opportunity fell to the hosts within the first ten minutes when Malika Apindia won possession high up the pitch and set up Mai Moncaster, who fired narrowly wide. At the other end, defender Eve Clarkson was called into action to produce a vital clearance and deny Arsenal the opener.

Minutes later and Rugby were ahead, with Nicky Potts opening the scoring with a volleyed effort that flew past the Arsenal goalkeeper. Clarkson then almost doubled the advantage herself, rising to meet another dangerous Apindia delivery, only to see her header crash against the post.

The hosts didn’t have to wait long for a second and following a scramble in the box, the ball broke kindly to Potts, who showed great composure to tuck home her second of the afternoon. Shortly after, another goalmouth scramble saw Clarkson get her reward, turning the ball in from close range to give Rugby a commanding 3–0 lead before half-time.

Potts came agonisingly close to a first-half hat-trick shortly before the break, with her long-range strike tipped away by the opposition goalkeeper. The second half continued in similar fashion, with both sides creating chances.

Borough keeper Poppy Soper preserved her clean sheet with a sharp save as Arsenal looked for a way back into the game. After a series of substitutions, the tempo slowed, but Rugby continued to look dangerous during transitions.

Substitute Bethan Roberts, who replaced Clarkson at the break, got herself on the scoresheet-her powerful effort proving too much for the visiting goalkeeper. Club captain Ebony Wiseman entered the action late on and almost marked her appearance with a goal, but her driven strike went just wide of the post.

Immediately after, Sofia Mallon forced another save before Yasmin Mosby put the gloss on an emphatic victory, rounding the keeper and calmly slotting home to make it 5–0.

It was a complete performance from Lee Burch’s side, with midfielder Nicky Potts named Player of the Match for her brilliant first-half display. The result sees Borough move top of Group K, as they look ahead to the next stage of their cup campaign.

Burch will now turn his team’s attention back to league action, as Borough host Liverpool Feds this Sunday at the Nationwide Windows Arena.
