MATCH REPORT
Rugby Borough Women FC 2–3 Wolves
31st August 2025
Brave fightback falls just short as Borough suffer first defeat of the season.
Rugby Borough Women fell to their first defeat of the campaign, losing 3–2 at home to
Wolves despite a spirited late comeback at the Nationwide Windows Arena.
In a scrappy, hard-fought contest, Borough showed great character to battle back from
three goals down, but ultimately ran out of time to complete the turnaround.
The opening stages were cagey, with neither side carving out many clear-cut
opportunities. Borough thought they should have had a penalty when Malika Apindia
went down under pressure inside the box, only for the referee to give a free-kick the
other way.
The first half continued to be littered with fouls and interruptions, but it was Wolves who struck the opener just before the break, bundling home from a corner in scrappy fashion.
The visitors struck again shortly after the restart, doubling their lead with a sharp finish before adding a third before the 70th minute mark to put themselves firmly in control.
Despite the setback, Rugby refused to fold and began to push forward with renewed
energy.
Their persistence was rewarded late on when substitute Lily Greenslade converted from
Apindia’s teasing cross to give the hosts hope.
Greenslade struck again late on with a composed finish to set up a tense finale, but
Borough could not find an equaliser before the final whistle. The result brings Borough’s unbeaten run to an end, but their fighting spirit in the closing stages will provide encouragement ahead of their next outing.
Attention now turns to cup action this Sunday, as Rugby host Northampton at the
Nationwide Windows Arena with kick-off at 3pm.
