Barton strike seals hard-fought cup victory as Borough go top of Group K.
Rugby Borough Women returned to winning ways with a battling 1–0 victory over Northampton Town in the FAWNL Cup at the Nationwide Windows Arena, a result that lifts them to the top of Group K.
Manager Lee Burch made changes for this cup clash and the side took time to settle, as Northampton began the brighter of the two teams, pressing high and asking questions of the Borough backline.
Gradually, the hosts found their rhythm and began to carve out chances of their own. Lily Greenslade was the first to test the visiting goalkeeper, before Malika Apindia’s dangerous delivery from wide clipped the post. Forward Mai Moncaster then went close to breaking the deadlock, with her effort pushed away smartly by the Town keeper.
The pressure told shortly after the half-hour mark when Kelis Barton opened the scoring. Reacting quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area, Barton kept her composure to fire home from close range and give the hosts the lead.
She almost doubled her tally early in the second half, forcing the goalkeeper into another strong save. Rugby continued to pile forward in search of a cushion, with Greenslade denied twice in quick succession and defender Eve Clarkson seeing her goal-bound effort cleared off the line, as she hunted her first goal for the club.
Northampton threatened late on, but Borough’s defensive organisation, combined with the industry of their midfield, ensured Barton’s first-half strike proved decisive. The clean sheet underlined a disciplined performance, while the result gives Burch’s side a timely boost in confidence, as they look ahead to a busy run of fixtures.
