Ruthless second-half display fires Borough to emphatic opening day win.
Rugby Borough Women FC got their league campaign off to the perfect start with a commanding 6–0 victory over Derby County Women at the Nationwide Windows Arena.
After a tightly contested and goalless first half, Rugby came out firing in the second period- turning on the style to secure three points and send a message to the rest of the division. The hosts made a positive start, with chances falling to Katy Morris and Lily Greenslade.
Morris came close to scoring early on, while Greenslade almost broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper only to see it drift agonisingly wide. Despite a cagey opening 45 minutes, the momentum shifted dramatically after the break.
Borough’s growing pressure was rewarded just before the hour mark, when Morris reacted quickest from a corner to power a bullet header past the Derby keeper.
Minutes later and the hosts doubled their advantage. Yasmin Mosby applied pressure high up the pitch and slid a perfectly weighted ball through to captain Ebony Wiseman, who kept her composure to slot home.
Substitute Mai Moncaster made an instant impact, rising highest to meet debutant Eve Clarkson’s pinpoint cross and nod in Rugby’s third of the afternoon. Another debutant, Sofia Mallon, added her name to the scoresheet with a well-taken finish after being unselfishly teed up by Moncaster.
The duo combined again moments later, with Moncaster turning provider once more as Mallon slotted in her second of the day. There was still time for a sixth, as substitute Jess Camwell drove to the byline and cut the ball back for Mallon to complete her hat-trick in stoppage time-a dream debut for the forward and a ruthless end to a superb second-half performance.
The result sees Rugby Borough climb to the top of the table after the opening weekend, with plenty of positives to take into their next few games. First up is a midweek trip to Loughborough Lightning in the FAWNL Cup this Thursday, with kick-off at 7.45pm and then they will return to league action on Sunday with an away fixture against Middlesbrough, where kick-off is set for 2pm.
