Eve Clarkson: Bringing Championship experience to Rugby Borough Women FC

1st September 2025

Rugby Borough Women’s FC have welcomed defender Eve Clarkson to the club, bringing with her a wealth of experience from the Women’s Championship and a versatility that allows her to cover multiple positions.

Clarkson has already made an impact, featuring off the bench in the league opener against Derby County, helping her new side to a 6-0 victory and providing an assist.

The 24-year-old’s journey in football began at grassroots level, though she was equally talented in swimming during her early years.

“I actually started playing football when I was in year 3 because my teacher at the time coached the local club and a lot of my friends were there. “I still wanted to pursue swimming just as much as football and I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to pick yet.”

Eventually, her passion for football won out, leading her to Blackburn Rovers Academy and later to university in the United States, where she earned a degree in sports science and psychology while continuing to develop her game. After a challenging season with Blackburn, the defender was ready for a fresh start in an environment where she could focus on enjoying football again. The chance to join Rugby Borough came at a pivotal stage in her career, offering both ambition and a welcoming team culture.

“Rugby seemed the right move because I’m 24. Last year was a bit of a struggle for me in terms of injuries and other things. I wanted to just have a year of enjoying football and playing. I didn’t want to just go somewhere for a year, I wanted to be here for the long run and grow with the club and bring a bit of Championship experience.”

Known for her versatility, Clarkson is capable of covering multiple defensive positions, bringing both physicality and tactical awareness to the squad.

The defender reflected on her personal goals for the season, aiming to bring both skill and leadership to her new team.

“My personal goals this season is just bringing as much as I can to a really good back line. I’m quite physical and aerial dominant and I love a big challenge. Those are some my strengths in my game, so just bringing that and also developing more on the ball.”

Last season at Blackburn, the club was forced to withdraw from the Championship after failing to meet league requirements around facilities, player welfare, and staffing. Having experienced the disappointment of Blackburn’s withdrawal from the Championship, Clarkson is motivated to channel that setback into positive performances this season.

“It is hard last year having grown up there at the club and the girls tried really hard to stay in the Championship. Ultimately, we achieved that but didn’t have the backing from the owners in terms of funds, which was hard because it’s almost as if all that hard work came to nothing. But I think for me it’s just motivation to keep working hard and you can only control what you can control. I feel like I’m going to work as hard as I can for the club. Progress is progress, so any steps forward you can take is great.”

Like any new signing, Clarkson faced a period of adjustment, adapting to a new environment and style of play. However, she has already featured in pre-season and made her competitive debut in the league opener against Derby County.

"Being in any new environment is difficult, but straight away I’m living in the house with some of the girls and they have made me feel so welcome. I couldn’t have picked a better place to be.”

The welcoming nature of the team has helped ease the transition, allowing her to settle in quickly both on and off the pitch. Looking ahead, Clarkson and her teammates are focused on success through unity and enjoyment.

“We’re going to take every game as it comes. It’s about being a team that is at its best when it enjoys its football. I watched the Liverpool cup game from last season and I was really impressed with the girls, so hopefully we can do that again this season. Take it game by game and have fun along the way.”

With her Championship experience, versatility, and positive approach both on and off the pitch, Eve Clarkson is poised to make a lasting impact at Rugby Borough Women’s FC this season.
