Rugby Borough Women FC 1–1 Middlesbrough Women

Rugby Borough Women were forced to settle for a point at Kilsby Lane, as they were held to a 1–1 draw by a resilient Middlesbrough side.

With promotion rivals continuing to set the pace, Borough knew the importance of taking maximum points on home soil. However, they faced a Middlesbrough side sitting in mid-table, who had already proven to be difficult opponents this season, having denied Borough victory in both league and cup meetings.

The hosts started on the front foot, enjoying an early spell of possession and moving the ball confidently as they looked to impose themselves on the contest. Middlesbrough threatened from a set piece in a dangerous area, but Poppy Soper comfortably dealt with the delivery in the Borough goal.

Rugby’s first clear opening came through Ebony Wiseman, who carried the ball forward before seeing her cross cut out by the visiting goalkeeper. The hosts were then given a scare midway through the half when Soper parried a shot back into danger, but Eve Clarkson produced a superb goal-saving block to keep the scores level.

Momentum continued to swing the host’s way, as Wiseman tested the Middlesbrough keeper once more, before a driving solo run from Malika Apindia, which started from the halfway line and ended with an effort narrowly wide of the post. Set pieces caused further problems for the visitors, with several scrambles inside the box, though Middlesbrough were able to clear their lines.

Just before the interval, Borough’s dominance was finally rewarded. Sofia Mallon’s low cross found Wiseman on the edge of the box, and she finished clinically into the bottom corner to give the hosts a deserved lead at the break.

Burch’s side resumed with intent after half-time and continued to apply pressure, going close through Hazard after another set-piece situation. However, Middlesbrough were gifted a route back into the game moments later, capitalising on an error at the back to equalise from close range.

Despite a series of changes from the hosts, clear-cut chances proved hard to come by as Middlesbrough dropped deeper and defended stubbornly. Late on, Borough thought they may have been given a lifeline when Greenslade and Apindia both saw penalty appeals waved away, while the latter also struck the post with a dangerous cross in the closing stages.

There was still time for a positive note as Katy Morris made her return from injury in stoppage time, while substitute Mai Moncaster had the final chance of the contest, though her header failed to find the target.

The girls will now turn their attention to a tough away test against second-placed
Wolverhampton Wanderers as they look to quickly return to winning ways.
