Rugby Borough Women 0–1 Burnley Women

Rugby Borough Women were narrowly beaten 1–0 by league leaders Burnley in their final home league fixture of the calendar year.

With just three points separating the sides ahead of kick-off, and Rugby sitting third in the table behind Wolves, Lee Burch’s side went into the contest aiming to close the gap at the top. The hosts began brightly, with Jess Camwell carving out the first opportunity of the match, a sharp change of direction followed by an instinctive strike that almost caught the Burnley goalkeeper off guard.

Rugby continued to threaten, and from an inviting corner delivery, Lily Greenslade came close to opening the scoring. Despite Borough’s encouraging start, it was Burnley who struck first, capitalising
on a defensive mistake to take the lead in the 10th minute.

Borough responded by trying to play their way back into the contest, but it was the visitors who created the next opportunity. Defender Eve Clarkson was alert to the danger, producing a superb last-
ditch tackle to prevent a clean shot on goal.

The remainder of the half developed into a cagey, tactical battle, with both sides searching for the game’s second goal. Rugby came out strong after the interval, pushing hard for an equaliser.

Greenslade continued to look dangerous, seeing one of her efforts blocked by a Burnley defender. Just after the hour mark, Borough created two big openings from excellent deliveries into the box- the first
scrambled clear and the second narrowly missed by the stretching Greenslade.

As Rugby committed bodies forward in the closing stages, Burnley threatened during transitions, but goalkeeper Nyla Peterkin produced a crucial save to keep her team within touching distance.

Despite a wave of late pressure, Borough were unable to break through as Burnley held firm to claim all three points. It was a performance full of effort, grit and quality from Burch’s side, who pushed the league leaders all the way on an afternoon where small margins proved decisive.

Rugby will now look to return to winning ways when they travel to Derby County this weekend.
