MATCH REPORT

U9 Girls take on Dunton & Broughton United

12th October 2020

This weekends under 9’s game  kicked off at a very sunny autumnal Kilsby Lane. Both teams got stuck in to the match right from kick off with some early challenges and attempts at the Dunton goal. The near misses in the opening five minutes really seemed to spur the girls on to push harder.

Sophie was in goal for three quarters of the match making some brilliant saves when called upon. Her distribution of the ball to the defenders really helped switch play and she made some brilliant kicks to push the team well up the pitch. After an awesome dive to defend the goal that resulted with a ball to the face, Isabel jumped in goal for the final quarter of the match defending the goal as confidently as Sophie.

Isla and Lara both played in defence in the opening two quarters and the improvements they’re both making are evident each week. Lara has worked hard on staying committed to chasing the ball down, which paid off more than once with her winning possession back from Dunton. Isla also worked really hard to defend and run the ball up the pitch getting the girls out of danger in their own half. She made some excellent throw ins and was determined in front of goal as well!

Isabel has settled brilliantly in to the team and is really enjoying playing. She was confident running the ball down the line and taking on players to get in front of the goal. Before she jumped in to goal there was some really impressive passing and attempts on goal from Isabelle.

Mia started the game up front and applied lots of pressure on the Dunton defence. She was often looking for the chance to pass to a team mate if she could and kept the Dunton defence guessing. She dropped back to play from the back towards the end of the game pushing the team back up the pitch often taking on a couple of players on her runs. Mia was awarded the player of the match trophy for her great attitude in the match and for showing her versatility when switching positions.

The match was refereed by two of Rugby Borough’s U15’s Maddie and Grace and they did a brilliant job holding their own on the pitch making important decisions in the match. A huge thanks to them for stepping in to help out! Not only did they do a brilliant job but they’ve also inspired the girls who all want to referee when they’re 15 too!

"You girls played brilliantly today with a great attitude and team spirit. I'm so surprised how many of you are new to the team this season. You're the best team we have played against so far this season. Well done and keep it up!"
