Rugby Borough U15 Girls got their season underway at home to Harborough Town Juniors U15 Girls, with new signings Holly and Aimee making debuts and everyone taking a step up to 11 a side bringing new formations and positions for many of the girls.

The game got off to a slow start with both sides clearly needing to blow off the lockdown cobwebs, before Rugby started to get a hold on the game with Belle and Liv in particular making great inroads down the wings. It took 27 mins for the first goal to come after a formation switch to beef up the midfield.

Holly, Lucie and Lyla started to get some great passing going and then Aimee showed a touch of class creating some space and unleashing an unstoppable shot, scoring on her debut. Rugby’s dominance continued, staying strong at the back and then our Captain Freya added a 2nd goal from close range.

The girls kept up the pressure and were unlucky not to get a 3rd, when Estere was brought down when in on goal but ‘no penalty’ was the decision. With half time approaching, Rugby lost concentration and Harborough struck twice in 6 minutes to bring the scores level at half time.

The 2nd half was a close affair with both sides creating chances but Rugby’s defence of Maddie, Thea and Grace (player of the match) made life difficult for Harborough Town, all put in a great shift. Amy was only called on a few times to keep Harborough at bay but she really impressed with her command and distribution from the back. Although more goals did not come it was not through a lack of trying. Aimee hit the post with another great effort and Freya was only denied from a corner following a great save from the Harborough Town keeper.

Both sides did not give up until the final whistle and Rugby will take many positives from this opening draw into the next match. A solid start to the season for the girls 😀.
