U15 Girls v Greentowers

27th September 2020

The Rugby Borough Girls U15s travelled to Hinckley to take on Greentowers for their 2nd league game of the season.

With a depleted squad of 12 the team welcomed four league debutants in Amy, Megan, Sophia and Imogen and started with Estere bravely stepping up to take onto the role of goalie.

The girls got off to a great start with Holly’s strike, following some good interplay in midfield, putting us in the lead after 6 mins. Greentowers responded quickly and then started to get on top, despite great fighting spirit from Rugby, taking a flattering 4 – 1 lead going into the break.

The new players showed what they could do with Amy showing her strength in defence (coupled with some monster throw ins), Imogen a constant threat down the left feeding Megan who kept the Greentowers defence on their toes and Sophia showing a great turn of pace cutting out a number of attacks.

The 2nd half was a better performance with the midfield really stepping up and starting to make inroads. Imogen continued to be threat down the left backed up by Grace and Sophia who restricted Greentowers chances. Maddie impressed moving up to midfield combining well with Freya, who battled hard as always, and Emily (who had now moved to striker) creating a number of good chances.

Thea was a rock at the back as usual alongside Amy and Megan (now playing right back) making sure Greentowers had to fight for every half chance. Aimee continued her impressive start to the season dancing her way through the Greentowers defence on a number of occasions but not quite managing to get the goal she deserved.

Estere (player of the match) pulled off some great saves and had a great performance especially considering this was her first match in goal for Rugby. The strong 2nd half performance was capped with Rugby getting the last goal of the game, another great strike from Holly, which was definitely deserved. The 6 – 2 final scoreline did not reflect the match and I’m sure the girls will be looking for payback when they play them for the return fixture with a full squad.

Although a disappointing result, this performance showed what this team is all about; every girl worked hard, supported each other and all took on any new challenge thrown at them.
