U9 Rugby Borough Girls v Blaby

1st November 2020

Rugby travelled to Blaby with only five players against a well-organised and strong team.

The girl’s strength showed through in the game, keeping their formation and working hard for each other for the full 40 minutes.

Sophie started in goal before getting some time out on the pitch later in the game. In the first half, Sophie made several vital saves. With her distribution following saves being key to the team moving back up the pitch.

Isla was todays player of the match after a slick performance at the back with her passing out to her teammates. When Isla moved into a forward position she made some great strikes of the ball, putting in to practice in the match the skills she has been working on during training.

Brooke was our rock just like England centre back Millie Bright. A great game today, always watching the play ready to be called into action. She showed some great skills coming away with the ball and passing confidently to her team mates. She’s always willing to work hard for her teammates and put in a great performance.

Lara was great today, really putting the hard work from training into play on the pitch. With a skilled turn, Lara took the ball past a Blaby defender and shot a wonderful ball which was just tipped around the post by the on-form Blaby Goalkeeper. Lara took up position in goal for the for last 10 minutes of the match and made some tremendous saves to keep her team in front. We thought she might lose her wobbly tooth when she was in goal but it hung on in there until after the match!

Mia had another fantastic game showing her defending and also her communication skills to bring the team together and get the girls focussed on the game plan. Mia helped take the game to Blaby causing the Blaby keeper to make some big saves and attempts to save. The Blaby coaching team were impressed with the Maradona roulette Mia made during the game.

As the team coach I could not be prouder of how the girls have come together as a team after a disruptive start to their season. They have all shown great individual and team spirit, performing brilliantly during their matches – much to the surprise of opposition coaches! The focus in training has been on practising new techniques and skills whilst having fun. This has paid off during our matches and it’s great to see the smiles on the girls faces as they train and play together. The experience of last seasons’ players Brooke, Sophie and Mia combined with the fresh talent and enthusiasm in Lara, Isabel and Isla has been exciting to see for me as a coach and all the girls parents.

Now we head into a lockdown enforced mid-season break. We’ll be back in action in December!
