Late Greenslade winner seals dramatic comeback for Borough

30th March 2026

Rugby Borough Women FC 2–1 Sporting Khalsa

Rugby Borough Women produced a stunning late turnaround to secure a dramatic 2–1 victory over Sporting Khalsa at Kilsby Lane, with a last-gasp winner completing an important comeback and earning all three points.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides, showing early intent and forcing Poppy Soper into action within the opening stages. Borough gradually settled into the contest, beginning to create chances of their own, with Sofia Mallon seeing two efforts denied by the Khalsa goalkeeper.

As the half progressed, the hosts grew in confidence, moving the ball well and building attacks with composure. However, they found it difficult to break down a stubborn Khalsa defence in the final third.

Khalsa came close to taking the lead when a stray back pass presented a dangerous opportunity, but Alanah Mann reacted superbly to recover and make a vital clearance. Despite that warning, it was the visitors who struck first.

A mistake at the back allowed Khalsa to regain possession, and the ball fell kindly to their attacker, who fired a powerful volley into the net to give her side the advantage. The half-time whistle followed shortly after, leaving Borough with work to do in the second period.

Burch’s side came out strongly after the break and nearly found an immediate response, with Lily Greenslade striking the crossbar. The pressure continued to build, and just before the hour mark, Saskia Morris tested the goalkeeper, who was equal to the effort once again.

Further opportunities followed, including an inviting delivery from Kelis Barton that narrowly evaded any orange shirts in the box. Barton then went close herself later on, seeing an effort clip the top of the crossbar as frustration began to grow.

With time ticking away, it seemed it might not be Borough’s day. A golden chance fell to substitute Mai Moncaster with less than 10 minutes remaining, but her header drifted just over the bar.

Moments later, however, Moncaster made amends. Reacting quickest inside the box, she tapped home from close range to bring Borough level and set up a tense finale.

Momentum was now firmly with the hosts, who continued to pile on the pressure. Errors began to creep into the Khalsa defence, and from an indirect free-kick following a back pass, Borough came close again, only for the effort to be tipped around the post.

The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Following a scramble in the box, Greenslade showed excellent composure to control a driven cross before firing home with her last touch of the game to complete a remarkable comeback.

There was still time for one final chance, with Jess Camwell nearly adding a third late on, but her strike went just wide. At full-time, Borough celebrated a huge three points, showing resilience and determination to turn the game around in dramatic fashion.

Attention now turns to a crucial away fixture against second-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, as the girls look to carry momentum into another key test.
