Borough respond in style to maintain third place with home victory
26th March 2026
Rugby Borough Women FC 3–1 Stoke City Women
Rugby Borough Women bounced back from their recent defeat at Burnley with an impressive 3–1 victory over Stoke City at Kilsby Lane, ensuring they remain third in the league.
In a contest that began with a physical edge, both sides were competitive in the early duels, committing a succession of fouls that disrupted the rhythm of the game and prevented either team from settling.
It was the visitors who made the breakthrough inside the opening 10 minutes. A well-worked move created space for the Stoke winger, who took her chance confidently by firing into the bottom corner to hand her side an early lead.
Borough responded positively, looking to regain control with some promising passages of play. Lily Greenslade thought she had found a route through, only to see her run marginally mistimed and the move halted for offside.
The hosts continued to press and were rewarded before the hour mark with a moment of real quality. Greenslade picked up the ball on the edge of the box and produced a superb strike into the top corner to bring Borough level.
Stoke reacted well to the setback and increased their intensity, but Rugby matched their efforts, with both sides defending resolutely in what remained a tightly contested encounter. Just before half-time, Kelis Barton delivered a dangerous ball into the box, though no one in orange and black could apply the finishing touch.
After the break, Borough looked to build on their momentum, with Greenslade again going close, only to be denied from close range by the Stoke goalkeeper. Moments later, however, the turnaround was complete. Malika Apindia’s delivery caused panic inside the Stoke penalty area, and after the visitors failed to clear their lines, Greenslade was on hand to poke home from close range and give Borough the lead.
Stoke once again responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but Borough stood firm. Barton produced a crucial defensive block to preserve the advantage – a moment that proved pivotal in the context of the game.
Just minutes later, Rugby extended their lead. A cross from the left found Amelia Hazard unmarked, and she showed great composure to bring the ball down before slotting it through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3–1 and put the hosts firmly in control.
With a quarter of an hour remaining, Greenslade had an opportunity to complete her hat-trick, but the Stoke goalkeeper stood tall and closed the angle well to deny her. Late on, Poppy Soper was called into action and produced an excellent save to ensure there would be no late comeback from the visitors.
At full-time, Borough secured a deserved 3-1 victory, combining attacking quality with defensive resilience to return to winning ways. Attention now turns to their next fixture, as Burch’s side prepare to host Sporting Khalsa this weekend.
