Borough bounce back with resilient home victory

22nd February 2026

Rugby Borough Women FC 1–0 Halifax Women

Rugby Borough Women returned to winning ways at Kilsby Lane with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Halifax, responding positively after their midweek defeat at West Brom Women.

Looking to steady the ship and regain momentum, Lee Burch’s side knew the importance of a strong reaction on home soil. Halifax arrived intent on frustrating the hosts, setting up a tense and competitive encounter from the outset.

There was an early moment of concern for Borough when a wayward back pass forced Poppy Soper to react quickly. The goalkeeper raced out of her box and beat the Halifax forward to the ball, averting a dangerous situation and settling any early nerves.

That scare sparked a response from the hosts. Nicky Potts and Jess Camwell both came close to opening the scoring as Borough began to find their rhythm, while Rhian Cleverly produced two vital defensive interventions to keep the contest level during a lively spell.

After a brief stoppage in play, the match became increasingly cagey. Both sides worked tirelessly out of possession, cancelling each other out and limiting clear-cut opportunities.

Just before the break, Mai Moncaster tested the Halifax goalkeeper twice in quick succession, with her second effort superbly tipped wide to ensure the sides went into the interval on level terms. Burch opted for a double change at half-time, introducing Amelia Hazard and Sofia Mallon in search of a breakthrough.

Mallon made an immediate impact, cutting inside before firing a precise strike beyond the goalkeeper to hand Borough the lead early in the second half.

With the advantage secured, Borough controlled large spells of possession while Halifax pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The visitors remained a threat, but disciplined defensive work and composure across the pitch helped the hosts manage proceedings.

The game nearly swung firmly in Borough’s favour with 20 minutes remaining when Lily Greenslade’s effort beat the goalkeeper, only for a Halifax defender to produce a last-ditch clearance off the line to deny a second goal.

Late chances followed as Borough looked to put the contest beyond doubt. Camwell saw an effort land on the roof of the net, while Ebony Wiseman’s strike drifted narrowly past the post, setting up a nervy conclusion.

Halifax pressed in the closing stages, but Borough showed resilience and determination to see out the victory and secure an important three points. After the match, supporters voted Mia Malone as Player of the Match following an impressive all-round performance.
