Rugby Borough Women 3 – 2 Walsall Ladies Dev

Squad; Beth, Megan E, Lucy, Em, Lorna, Paige, Nat, Maisie, Meg S, Meg B, Sarah, Chloe, Charlie, Geraldine.

Another home game at Kilsby Lane for Rugby Borough Women, with much better weather conditions than the previous week.

It was a shaky first half for the women, who were still without a few first teamers. They were battling through the wind and a strong Walsall side.

Walsall were lucky with their first goal as Beth parried the ball out straight to a walsall player to tap the ball into the back of the net. Borough’s passing in the first half was a little wayward giving walsall more opportunities at goal plus Borough had a few half chances of their own but neither side could find the goal.

Borough started the second half with a bit more urgency, energy and effort after their half time team talk,  creating a lot more chances in the first few minutes but a lapse in concentration for Borough as Walsall counter attacked and scored their second of the game.

Rugby stepped up their game using the wind to their advantage with Charlotte down the wing crossing the ball in to Meg B who neatly put the ball into the back of the net. Borough were now eager to get back into the game with Charlotte again running in on goal only to be pulled back on the edge of the box, leading to a Borough free kick. Captain Nat stood over the ball, hit it sweetly and placed the ball into the top corner of the net to equalise.

Rugby were starting to play the ball a lot quicker now as they knew they had the momentum. When losing it they were hunting it down quicker and winning every ball in the middle of the park. In the last couple minutes of the game, Maisie ran through the walsall defence beating two players and slotting it past the keeper for Borough to take the lead. Maisie’s first goal for the club and a very important one too.

Borough then held out for the last couple of minutes of the game. Coming back from 2-0 down and winning 3-2 showed the girls grit and determination they had in this game. Great teamwork to knuckle down in the second half and deservedly get the win.
