Walsall Ladies Dev vs Rugby Borough Women FC

25th April 2021

Rugby Borough Women’s second game in the Covid Cup was away against Walsall Ladies Development. Our ladies team were proud to represent #FVH2021 (Football v Homophobia) with the popular rainbow ball!

Walsall vs Rugby Borough Women FC

With a few players injured from last week’s match and from training, Rugby didn’t have a full squad and were also missing goal keeper Beth due to injury too. Usually playing out field, Captain Nat stepped up to go in goals for the team.

Rugby Borough made a good start to the match, passing around the Walsall players and making some runs to create chances, that unfortunately went wide. Lorna also had a great shot on goal but frustratingly hit the crossbar!

The Walsall goalkeeper started to collect Rugby’s through balls, putting a stop to all chances created by our ladies. Managing to keep up the pressing movements, Lorna got through on goal but the ball deflected off the goal keeper and fell to Bailey, who turned the defender and tapped the ball across the line, putting Rugby in the lead with 1-0.

Rugby continued to create some good chances within the first half but Walsall started getting into the game when subs were brought on and Rugby began to get tired.

Half-time score: Walsall 0 – 1 Rugby Borough Women

The second half started with Rugby feeling a bit more refreshed but due to the lack of subs, it was hard to keep a full team of 11 fit on the field. Walsall were lobbing the ball every time over the defence to try and break through, but the strong back line of Sam, Tammi and Lexi kept up well with the Walsall attackers.

Rugby continued to create some chances but couldn’t take advantage, and a collision between Beth and a Walsall player caused Beth to come off with an injury, adding more worry to the Rugby squad with the additional player injury.

Walsall were given a corner, followed by claiming handball in the box, which was then given. Walsall took the penalty very well and made it 1-1. Rugby still gave their all in the game, including Lorna hitting the crossbar again in the last couple minutes of the game.

Full-time result:

Walsall Ladies Development 1 – 1 Rugby Borough Women

Overall a good game for the ladies who struggled through injuries but played very well against Walsall who played their first team players.
Well done for Sam for getting man of the match!
