MATCH REPORT

U11 Girls v FC Aztec

14th February 2022

The girls new rain jackets ( Thanks to our sponsor Amber Utilities!) came in very handy in a wet & windy day at Kilsby Lane where Rugby Borough hosted FC Aztec.   It was a very competitive game the last time these 2 sides met so the girls new they had to be on top form to keep their great run going.

Rugby settled well and were soon on the attack,  excellent ball winning in midfield from Megan & Ruby stopped Aztec from advancing and ensured the Rugby attackers could push forward.  Anna was showing her trademark dribbling and crossing skills down the right hand side which forced Aztec back whilst Ese’s strong running was keeping the opposition defenders on their toes.

Aztec as expected had more of the ball than some of the opposition in recent games but they were met with a rock solid defence with Lyra & Peyton making lots of tackles to win the ball back.

As the half wore on Ava & Amber came on to stretch the defence again showing how capable they are going forward whilst also protecting the defence.  Freya playing her first match for this team slotted in effortlessly into defence and then midfield and showed excellent composure to win the ball & then pick out good forward passes.  It wasn’t a day anyone wished to be a goalkeeper but Chloe was as reliable as ever collecting through balls and making an excellent save from a corner.

Just as the half was drawing to a close a succession of corners had Aztec pinned back & an excellent delivery from Ruby was bundled home by Anna to give Rugby their deserved reward.

Into the second half & Rugby started to dominate the ball.  The defence remained resolute with Lyra & Peyton forming a great partnership, remaining switched on at all times.  The ball was sticking up front with Ruby using her strength & skills to move the team up the park.   Excellent passing through the midfield from Freya & Anna and good forward play from Ese, Amber & Ava saw the team win a succession of corners.   2 of these were rewarded through quick thinking from Ruby & then brilliant strikes by Megan.

Aztec managed to pull one back through an excellent strike following a corner of their own that Chloe had no chance with.   This gave the visiting team some confidence that they could get back in however Rugby picked up where they left off & converted a replica of the previous corners through another fine strike from Megan.

Ava moved back into defence near the end and showed her versatility & strength making several good tackles

In summary an excellent performance again from the girls,  they are proving they are a match for anyone in the league.  It was a good day also for spectators who got to sit in the stand & watch 4 goal of the season contenders and a great match

Player of the match was Megan for an outstanding midfield performance & 3 top class strikes.
