Halas Hawks vs Rugby Borough Women FC

27th September 2020

Birmingham County Women’s Football League Premier Division

27 September 2020

Kilsby Lane, Rugby

The ladies 1st team played their away game to Halas Hawks at Kilsby Lane as Halas were unable to host the match at their home ground.

Squad: Beth, Nat, Lexi, Cammie, Em, Bailey, Lorna, Molly, Hannah, Charlotte, Sarah, Hannah, Sam, Suzzie, Anna, Cheryl.

Sarah Gilkes - Rugby Borough
Sarah Gilkes - Girl of the Game

Rugby started off the game really well and kept possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. Halas Hawks had the advantage of the wind behind them and they tried a few counter-attacks, but the back line of Em, Sam and Lexi standing strong in defence stopped every one of their attempts. Half way through the first half, Suzzie played the ball into Sarah who still had a lot to do and managed to get by one of the Hawks’ defenders with a nice bit of skill to go on and get the first goal of the game. Rugby stayed on top of the game and controlled it very well. With some good pressing of the ball, Charlotte opened up space for her to get a shot at goal and she scored the second one of the game making it 2-0. Halas Hawks then had a corner nearing the end of the second half, where they tapped the ball into the net.

Half time score: Halas Hawks 1-2 Rugby Borough

The second half started well for Rugby with the wind on their side this time, which led to a quick goal for Sarah to get her second of the game, making the score 1-3. Rugby were much more dominant with the ball in the second half creating many chances throughout the second half, which should have been taken! A good cross in from Em found Sarah’s feet straight away and let her complete her first hat trick of the season! Rugby were in total control of the game, all positions and players were playing their part in the game. Charlotte made a good run after a bit of skill on the edge of the box where she got pulled back. The ref blew his whistle for a penalty and Nat came forward to take it and finished well, putting Rugby further in the lead. Rugby continued to create many chances with Sarah hitting the woodwork.

Another good performance from the ladies which has got them sitting joint top of the table after winning their first three matches of the season!

Well done to Sarah for getting Girl of the Game.
