Meg B showed her class when taking on four players on the edge of the box with a superb shot but hit the post and was cleared by Sphinx defence. Emily made her debut for the first team with a full 90 minutes played and helped out at the back with many defence clearances.

It was also good to see Sophie Clarke back in action after a back injury. Sphinx had a few chances come their way towards the end of the half but Borough’s defence held firm and Beth in goal kept them out.

Coventry Sphinx 0-0 Rugby Borough

Second half started even for the first 20 mins with both teams having chances. Charlotte broke, chasing down a loose through ball, rounded the keeper but the post denied Rugby again.

Borough did have the ball in the back of the net with 15 minutes to go, Katie Anderton finishing from a free kick but was ruled offside. Borough’s heads dropped a little and Sphinx countered in the last 5 minutes creating a few late chances, but Beth held her ground and kept them out.

The game finished 0-0 and went straight to penalties.

The Rugby girls stepped up to take penalties: Nat (scored) – Meg B (scored) – Sarah (scored) Cammie (scored) Beth (scored). With all 5 goals scored for both teams the penalties then went to sudden death, Beth saved Sphinx 6th penalty, leading to Katie A to step up but unfortunately the Sphinx goal keeper saved the penalty. Beth then saved the 7th penally tipping it onto the crossbar. Maisie then stepped up and scored the winning penalty for Borough.

Well done to all the girls who stepped up to take penalties and huge congratulations to Beth for saving them and also taking and converting her penalty.

Manager Dave said “best game of the season so far, great squad effort and team performance! Couple of injuries picked up but on to the quarter finals of the cup”.
